On 15 August 2024, SEAMEO STEM-ED Director, Dr. Kritsachai Somsaman, delivered an insightful presentation on how to extract key messages from academic materials, such as webinars or research papers, for use in social media posts. He highlighted several essential strategies for creating content that resonates with audiences. For instance, he emphasized that infographics, which present information in an easy-to-digest format, are effective attention grabbers. Additionally, top ten lists are popular among viewers and tend to generate high engagement.
Academic materials are often complex and challenging to interpret, but generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini can assist in distilling these materials into more accessible content.
During his presentation, Dr. Kritsachai demonstrated a practical approach to leveraging YouTube's caption feature to obtain transcripts from relevant videos. He showed how to copy and paste the captions into a document file, with the crucial step being data cleansing—a necessary task to correct errors, particularly with participant names, as YouTube’s automatic captioning often struggles with accurate name recognition. He pointed out that AI can tolerate a certain level of inaccuracy and extraneous information, so it’s unnecessary to achieve perfect transcription before utilizing AI for further processing. Instead, he suggested using the AI to process the document and then making corrections based on the output.
Dr. Kritsachai also illustrated methods for extracting key information from transcripts, such as identifying noteworthy quotes from each speaker, creating top ten lists, and uncovering issues that challenge popular beliefs.
The lecture notes from his presentation, along with example files used during the demonstration, are available with this post.
