FOCAL Initiative: Future-Oriented Classrooms for AI Literacy

About The Project

Currently Artificial intelligence technology plays a crucial role in developing education and future skills for learners. However, many teachers still face the challenge of designing AI-powered lessons that are appropriate for their learners. This includes a lack of tools and guidelines for organising effective learning activities.

A UNESCO report from the Ministerial Roundtable on Generative AI and Education (May 2023) found that more than 90% of teachers had received neither formal training nor guidance on how to use generative AI in schools. While this figure is alarming in itself, a closer examination reveals even deeper disparities, with significant gaps in access, support, and readiness between larger, better-resourced schools and smaller or underserved institutions.

A project on AI-supported learning for pilot schools was therefore initiated to support instructional practices aligned with the Media and AI Literacy Framework, while promoting innovative learning through the FOCAL Initiative: Future-Oriented Classrooms for AI Literacy.

The project aims to establish a network of pilot schools that will serve as model institutions for AI-enabled learning. These schools will trial innovative teaching approaches, refine scalable classroom practices, and foster collaboration among educators within Thailand and eventually across the broader region. Supported by SEAMEO STEM-ED and the PISA Centre of the Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC), the initiative contributes to broader efforts in strengthening teacher development, advancing learner empowerment, and building a sustainable ecosystem for AI-integrated STEM education in the region.

SEAMEO STEM-ED and the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University officially launched a new partnership on 30 June 2026 at the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Partnership Agreement by Dr. Kessara Amornvuthivorn, Centre Director of SEAMEO STEM-ED, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanapat Wanichanon, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening STEM education and preparing learners with the knowledge and skills needed for the future.

The collaboration will focus on developing micro-credential systems through project-based learning, strengthening industry linkages to connect education with real-world experience, and expanding STEM learning opportunities to local schools to promote more equitable access to quality education. Together, both institutions will also explore initiatives that foster innovation, capacity building, and future-ready competencies for learners across Thailand and the Southeast Asian region.

The partnership will kick off with the implementation of the FOCAL Initiative (Future-Oriented Classrooms for AI Literacy) as its first collaborative programme, supporting AI integration in teaching and learning while equipping students with AI literacy, future-ready skills, and leadership opportunities through innovative and scalable learning models across the region.

This partnership marks a shared commitment to advancing STEM education, fostering innovation, and empowering the next generation of learners to drive sustainable development across Southeast Asia.

Goals and Objective

The programme will adopt a Project-Based Learning Approach with hands-on student activities using Floaino and Micro:bit kits while being grounded in real-world problems. Teachers will be also capacitated to deliver AI supported curriculums in their classrooms and supported throughout the implementation. Students will be encouraged to learn and discuss among themselves to boost peer learning, student leadership and other 21st century skills.
