SEAMEO STEM-ED, Chevron, and MOE Expand Southeast Asian STEM Education’s Horizon with STEM Fair and Expo 2023

10 March 2023 ─ The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for STEM Education (SEAMEO STEM-ED), Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., and Ministry of Education (MOE) held one of the most anticipated Southeast Asian STEM education events in 2023 titled “STEM Fair and Expo 2023” ─ as the three allies to drive regional STEM education to champion global standards.

One common belief that glued the three to the frontiers of education is the immeasurable capabilities of the youth ─ and adhering to STEM education ─ is what this force foresees better equipped capable Southeast Asian talents. The three agencies in their own right have contributed their resources, expertise, and time to the STEM Fair and Expo 2023 (and its programs) to ensure the true potential of Southeast Asian students will be discovered within the next decade.

In this post, extracts from SEAMEO STEM-ED Centre Director, Dr. Kritsachai Somsaman; President of Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., Chatit Huayhongtong and Deputy Minister of MOE H.E. Dr. Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich interview are published to honor their commitments.

SEAMEO STEM-ED Director, Dr. Somsaman highlighted the Centre’s determination in uniting educational institutions (national and regional) to create an impact at the policy level.

“We are aiming for the policy level, to be able to push forward policy in STEM education will be a great accomplishment,” SEAMEO STEM-ED Director said.

He also added, “planting the seed of knowledge will elevate national competitiveness and adapt to the 21st century.”

President of Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., Mr. Huayhongtong exampled Chevron’s contribution to the country’s socio-economic sustainability, stating that “from the very beginning of Chevron Enjoy Science (an initiative founded in 2015 for learning STEM in an enjoying manner which lays a foundation for students’ career crafting) ─ we have purposefully become part of the effort in bringing society to a better future with the long-running project in collaboration with our like-minded partners. Our culture believes in the ‘power of human energy’, so we are intent on human development through education reform and improvement.”

 

He also remarked, “throughout the past few decades, we have been supporting a multitude of educational initiatives. We are determined to advance the body of STEM knowledge and integrate that into the Thai education system, thereby contributing to the foundation upon which socio-economic strengths are built.”

MOE Deputy Minister, H.E. Dr. Sophonpanich said, "Thailand's education reforms to meet the demand of the labor market in the future that, "the Ministry of Education is set on developing the body of knowledge for STEM education by building a robust network of collaboration with several agencies to be able to prepare young people for the ever-changing world disrupted by technology and unforeseen circumstances."

 

Citing the implementation of policy for how to provide STEM education in educational institutions, as well as monitoring and assessing their progress and performance, she underlined, “the MOE devised STEM education curriculums for all schools in the country and strive to increase the capability of the new generation of teachers, with an emphasis on the importance of providing coding lessons for all school levels in Thailand.”
