AI in Education: Shaping the Classroom of Tomorrow

On 18 October 2024, the panel discussion titled “AI in Education: Shaping the Classroom of Tomorrow” took place during the Didacta Asia Congress, featuring insights from Dr Kritsachai Somsaman, SEAMEO STEM-ED Centre Director. He discussed the evolution of artificial intelligence and its transformative potential in education, highlighting both opportunities and challenges.

A central theme of the presentation was the effective integration of AI into educational practices. The director emphasised the importance of supporting students in their learning journeys. Rather than merely providing answers, AI should empower learners to tackle problems independently, fostering a deeper understanding of the material. This approach encourages critical thinking and contextual awareness, allowing students to connect concepts in meaningful ways.

The role of AI in reducing cognitive load was also underscored. Immediate feedback and interactive tools can alleviate the mental strain often associated with complex subjects. Techniques such as prompting and hinting enable students to explore concepts independently, promoting a more engaging and productive learning experience.

Moreover, the adaptability of AI technologies in tailoring lessons to meet individual student needs was highlighted. By adjusting support as learners progress, AI can facilitate a personalised educational experience. This individualised approach not only enhances self-directed learning but also cultivates essential lifelong skills, equipping students to navigate their educational paths with confidence.

These insights collectively illustrate how thoughtfully implemented AI can reshape the educational landscape, creating opportunities for students to thrive in an increasingly complex world. As educators embrace these technologies, they can foster environments that support innovation, creativity, and effective learning outcomes for all students.
