The world is now entering the age of artificial intelligence (AI). With its immense capabilities and many possibilities ahead, our lives will surely be impacted by its implications regardless of the industry we operate in. In the realm of education, SEAMEO STEM-ED Director, Dr. Krtisachai Somsaman shared his vision and insights through a story (published June 15, 2023, on the Head Foundation website) titled “𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.”

Exampling how he utilized ChatGPT, the Centre Director shared three core principles for policymakers and educators to adopt and be aware of in teaching and learning. The three key principles are coined “zeroth principle”, “first principle”, and “second principle” which can be summarized as:

𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞: The foundation, without this, the rest of the principles would be useless. The main idea is that we already have access to a powerful tool; instead of competing with it, we should learn to use it effectively.

𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞: Remember not to trust everything ChatGPT says. ChatGPT is based on a generative AI algorithm that can create seemingly new and realistic content.

𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞: Learning how ChatGPT works and understanding its limitations.

Dr. Somaman also extracted his personal usage of AI and presented it in a simplistic manner. This illustrated how individuals can tailormade their tasks and gain new perspectives ─ once the necessary knowledge is grasped.
